Here’s Our Negotiating Partner

Hot on the heels of the release of the ISG report, we now get news that one of our would-be negotiating partners for peace and stability in Iraq wants to offer us some heart-warming advice.

IRANIAN President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today warned Western leaders to follow the path of God or “vanish from the face of the earth”, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported.

“These oppressive countries are angry with us … a nation that on the other side of the globe has risen up and proved the shallowness of their power,” Mr Ahmadinejad said in a speech in the northern town of Ramsar.

“They are angry with our nation. But we tell them ‘so be it and die from this anger’. Rest assured that if you do not respond to the divine call, you will die soon and vanish from the face of the earth,” he said.

Get that? Here’s his negotiating point – his offer to all of us who aren’t Muslim: “…if you do not respond to the divine call, you will die soon…”.

How quickly did James Bakers’ team say we should capitulate to this guy? Next year? The year after?

UPDATE: One of the comments in my last post read:

The ISG recommended that we find out what Iran and Syria want in Iraq–this is just sensible. Presumably, they’re backing their guys just like we’re backing ours; since there are 2 sides to the civil war, there must be SOME overlap in the geopolitical horserace.

Ignoring the goals of your enemies is just foolish–we’re clearly not powerful enough to exert our will blindly, the way Cheney and Rumsfeld perceieve geopolitics.

Well, here is what one of our enemies wants – submission to the will of Allah as they believe it. Think you can negotiate with that? Think a nice cozy table talk is going to back him down one inch on the “accept the will of Allah or die” demand?

If you “let’s just talk to them and maybe we can all be buddies” folks really and truly think that Mad Mahmoud is going to waver one inch from his oft-stated desires, then I just can’t help you. The best I can do is to try to keep other folks from suffering from your delusion.
