This is because we artificially inflate the price of sugar to protect sugar growers in the Gulf states (represented by Republicans, of course). When you travel to other countries, you will notice that Coca Cola tastes a little different (and better). That's because it's actually made from sucrose instead of high fructose corn syrup. This issue is one that should be corrected by government intervention. It's just that we need to remove the government intervention and let the market work properly. It might cost votes in the south and midwest by removing price protections and subsidies, but it should be done. One would think that those Republican strongholds would be willing to sacrifice their jobs to the free market. But history shows otherwise.
