Oh No! Corn!

Beware the corn!

No, really. According to Miss C, PBS and NPR are warning parents of the eminent danger their children face from high fructose corn syrup. Says Miss C,

According to the left, the government is always responsible for the behavior of individual citizens. If citizens make bad decisions, it can be corrected only by government intervention. The corporations force us to eat packaged food. Their advertising brainwashes “stupid” average Americans into buying food that will eventually “kill” them. Government subsidies to corn farmers “force” people to eat Oreos and Hostess cupcakes made with high fructose corn syrup. So the government must “force” Americans to wean themslves from the corn syrup tit. It’s all about the left getting our minds right.

It’s an interesting paradox, isn’t it, that our government subsidizes and castigates the very same product? Makes you wonder how much of your tax money is being used to buy off what other lobbies. Or it should, I’d think.

The reason we eat foods with high fructose corn syrup is that foods with sugar in them are not readily available. The price of sugar in the US is approximately three times the world market price. This is because we artificially inflate the price of sugar to protect sugar growers in the Gulf states (represented by Republicans, of course). When you travel to other countries, you will notice that Coca Cola tastes a little different (and better). That's because it's actually made from sucrose instead of high fructose corn syrup. This issue is one that should be corrected by government intervention. It's just that we need to remove the government intervention and let the market work properly. It might cost votes in the south and midwest by removing price protections and subsidies, but it should be done. One would think that those Republican strongholds would be willing to sacrifice their jobs to the free market. But history shows otherwise.
