New York Times: Saddam Could Have Had A Nuke In A Year.

| November 3, 2006 | Comments (3)

No, folks, I’m not making this story up. It’s real. And it may be the story of the year, if not the past five years.

Today, the New York Times is reporting that documents taken from the former Hussein regime in Iraq reveal that not onlyh did he have the technical know-how to build a nuclear device, he could have done so in a year.

Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq had abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Hussein’s scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.

Okay, that’s not exactly the thrust of the article, but that really is the bombshell (no pun intended) revelation.

Let me sum that up again for you: Saddam Hussein. Nuclear bomb. One year.

I’ll have more on the story, including the tidbit that there were also chemical weapons involved and that the IAEA and nations like France and Germany knew this all along while essentially calling George Bush a liar for saying exactly what these documents have proven but I’ll post more on that later. My computer is giving me some problems.

In the meantime, read the story. It’s a blockbuster.

UPDATE: The Anchoress must have had a little fly on the wall of the Times offices this morning. How else could she have captured the panic of Bill Keller so well?
