So A Guy From the AP Was On Saddam’s Payroll Too…

The American Thinker tips us this morning that, thanks to a captured document from Iraq, Saddam Hussein had a spy inside the Associated Press that supplied him with advance information on a story about the formation of UNMOVIC. UNMOVIC, as you’ll recall, was Hans Blix’ UN inspection team tasked with inspecting Iraq’s weapons stocks to make sure that it was in compliance with the more than a dozen UN resolutions.

I’m sure that the commentary on this article will mostly talk about how unsurprising it is that Hussein had moles inside a US journalistic organization and the general lack of objectivity of the MSM. I think there’s another point to be made.

For four years we’ve been told that Saddam Hussein did not have WMDs, that he wasn’t even close to developing WMDs, and that any WMDs he did have were destroyed in the 1990s (thanks to a brave and steadfast Clinton administration).

If that’s true, why would he care about UNMOVIC? What concern would he have about weapons inspections? If he was truly as clean as we are told that he was, Blix’s crew would have found nothing and would have given him a clean bill of health. He would have been out from under the resolutions and the sanctions. He would have been golden because the international community could have cared less (not that they care any more today) about his ongoing genocides or anything else he was doing in his country.

I think this memo is important because it demonstrated that he wanted information about pending inspections even in 2000 so that he could prepare for them well in advance. he needed that information so he could hide the evidence, intimidate the inspectors, and heat up the Oil for Food bribe machine to pay off a few more European politicians.
