Matthews to NewsBusters: News is Hard
Goodness, this is just too funny.
Chris Matthews, who on his show, has accused various members of the Bush administration of nearly everything save cannibalism and high treason in the Valeria Plame “leak” story has been unusually silent about Richard Armitage. You’d think that the guy who has been all over the story on a national television program might be interested in reporting that the whole thing was a ginormous waste of your time and mine and that we finally can close the book on the whole stupid thing.
Except, no. See, doing what I just did in one paragraph is beyond Matthews ability.
Matthew Shepard of Newsbusters (a blog with which I am also loosely affiliated) decided to ask Matthews the same question I asked and here, in a nutshell, was his answer:
Q: Maybe, but isn’t it at least worth showing your viewers that this guy has no credibility considering how much you talked about the story before? Shouldn’t he be held accountable for wasting all our time? Why not invite one of his representatives or defenders on the show?
A: Well, the story’s just gotten so complicated. I mean, it’s just such a mess. Because what if it’s true that Armitage was the source, but those other guys [presumably Rove and Scooter Libby], also were leakers, what then?
There you go. No denouement from Chris Matthews because telling you that Leaker Zero, the shadowy figure we’ve been searching for high and low for three years is Richard Armitage, close personal appendage to former Secretary of State Colin Powell is too complicated. It’s too tough to explain all the ins and outs of the fact that Richard Armitage, who watched the names of plenty of good people get dragged through the mud for three years, who allowed Judith Miller to sit in jail for months, whose silence cost you millions of dollars in the form of Patrick Fitzgerald’s investigation, was the blabbermouth. It was a Rubik’s Cube-like puzzler to let you know that the whole thing amounted to absolutely nothing and that every single innudendo-laden report Matthews made was complete rubbish.
No way that he could spend, say, five minutes giving you those little tidbits.
But I just did. Does that make me a better talking head than Matthews?
