Just adding to the buzzwords. War is one of them. The other day CNN headlines that Congress is at War on Internet Gambling. War, hmm? How about cracking down on existing legislation or creating new legislation, enforcing new laws, etc? It doesn't seem co-measured to me to apply the term "war" to legal action upon a white collar sort of crime. Is it just just hype, hyperbole to jazz up a 'non-news' day? Ho hum.

There's a Monty Python bit (from circa 1970, remember).

Mr Notlob has folk songs coming from his body. A surgeon and his team discover hippie "squatters" living inside him. They awaken Mr Notlob and ask if they are paying him rent. One of the hippies sneers "You're not furnished, you fascist!"

So even then it was a joke.

[...] The winning entries in the Watcher’s Council vote for this week are It’s Not a War. It’s a Trendy Buzzword! by The Sundries Shack, and Hezbollah Probably Lost the War, But They May Never Have Been In It To Win by Mere Rhetoric. The full results of the vote are here.
There's some truth in Scoffer the Second's assertion that 'fascist' is a term that has been used loosely and that , for many, has lost its original meaning. It's the lefties that did it.

My recollection of the sixties is that the masses of drugged out, wooly minded, narcissistic left wing youth (with whom I identified at the time!) called anyone in authority a fascist. Nixon, for sure. Generals in the Vietnam War. Even toll collectors! 'Fascist' meant 'I resent your having the right to tell me what to do'.

This is part of a more general trend on the left: to use hyperbole, resulting in words softening and broadening in their meaning. For example: 'abuse'. 'Rascism'. Even 'rape'. These words don't mean what they once did, at least for the whackos. For these guys, they signify 'you did/said something I don't like'.

As you note, however, GWB is using 'fascist' in its original, precise, meaning. And he is absolutely spot on.
