The UN Votes for Peace and Kofi Annan Embarasses Us All Again
So, the UN Security Council has finally hammered out a cease-fire agreement among Israel, Hezbollah, and Lebanon.
That’s more than likely a good thing and, though I have serious misgivings about the wisdom of treating Hezbollah as if it were a sovereign nation instead of the mercenary band of Islamist killers it really is and in including Hezbollah in the negoatiations instead of demanding (again!) its immediate disarming as already required by a previous UNSC resolution, there’s a chance that this all might work out for the better. Ace seems to hold that opinion and goes into deeper detail. Andy McCarthy holds the opposite opinion and his concerns about legitimizing Hezbollah are, if anything, even stronger than mine.
There is something in that article that I just can’t resist, though, which is a quote from Kofi Annan.
Kofi Annan may well be the most useless and pathetic public figure on the planet. Nearly every time he speaks, he turns the little creature of snark that lives mostly quietly in my heart into a Raving Snark Beast. He is to my snark what a full moon is to a werewolf and, God help me, he’s done it again. Here’s his quote.
Annan said the United Nations’ failure to act sooner has “badly shaken the world’s faith” in the body. “I would be remiss if I did not tell you how profoundly disappointed I am that the council did not reach this point much, much earlier,” he said.
Yes, folks, this has “badly shaken the world’s faith”.
Let’s look at a few things that apparently didn’t “badly shake the world’s faith”, shall we?
- The genocide in Darfur that the UN couldn’t even bother to call “genocide”.
- The genocide in Somalia that has only now ended with Islamists controlling he entire nation and putting people to death for watching a World Cup Soccer match.
- The genocide in Rwanda, over which Annan presided when he was UN Head of Peacekeeping.
- The massacre of 7,000 in Srebrenica, Bosnia under the watchful eyes of Annan’s peacekeeping troops.
- The genocide of the Marsh Arabs in Iraq and the draining of the swamps in the southern part of that country which was one of the worst man-made ecological disasters in the history of the world.
- The genocide of the Kurds in northern Iraq, which included the rampant use of chemical weapons on helpless civilian populations
- The two-decade genocide in East Timor that lasted up to 1998.
- The decade-long pillaging and death caused by Charles Taylor in Liberia.
- Nearly two-decades worth of Islamist oppression and murder by Mullah Omar and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Those do not include his extensive role in the Oil for Food program that enriched him and those close to him at the cost of the lives of thousands of Iraqis due to disease and starvation.
And those are just the big incidents which went largely ignored by the UN Security Council. To be sure, there were resolutions. But just as the resolution to disarm Hezbollah has gone ignored (and now completely overturned by the UNSC), those resolutions were quickly forgotten.
Kofi Annan is, in every conceivable way, an abject failure as the Secretary General of the United Nations. He is, as best I can tell, an excuser for genocidal dictators and thieves, the best friend an Islamist mullah ever had, and an embarassment to the entire world. The blood of tens of millions of innocent people are on his hands and he barely seems to notice. His criticisms of Israel and his notable lack of criticism for Hezbollah and its masters in Syria and Iran are inexcuseable, as is his quote in this article. The UN was created after World War II specifically to prevent genocide and the rise of bloodthirsty dictators. It has become a haven for murderers and their lickspittle apologists of which Kofi Annan is chief.
