We’re All A Bunch of Gits!

Yes. Yes. We’ve heard it before

LONDON (AFP) – People in Britain view the United States as a vulgar, crime-ridden society obsessed with money and led by an incompetent president whose Iraq policy is failing, according to a newspaper poll.

The United States is no longer a symbol of hope to Britain and the British no longer have confidence in their transatlantic cousins to lead global affairs, according to the poll published in The Daily Telegraph.

Why, exactly, am I suppsed to care?

I have no doubt at all that anytime, and every time, Britons need a naiton to “lead global affairs” they will not hurry to do it themselves. They will do what they have done for the past half-century and look to the United States.

If Britons truly wished some other nation to take the lead in world affairs, I could suggest that take the initiative. The world could use strong leadership to end the ongoing genocide in Darfur or to finally bring our troops home in Bosnia. Britain would make an excellent leader on Iranian unclear weapons, except that it already had that opportunity and botched it.

Here’s the thing. I like Britain. I like just about all things British. I have great respect for the country from which mine fought free and the nation that nearly alone held off Hitler’s fearsome war machine during the early years of World War II. I like the people of Britain, generally, too. I think they are for the largest part unfailingly polite and possessed of a genial nature and a dry wit that almost always makes me laugh. It appears that they like us, too.

With much of the worst criticism aimed at the US adminstration, the poll showed that 70 percent of Britons like Americans a lot or a little.

But of course they do, because, when it comes down to it, we’re family.

I suspect that the results of this poll come not from honestly-held opinions but from years of misinformation piped to them at their expense by the BBC, which is among the most anti-American media outlets you will ever find. I’d not have a good opinion of me either if all I ever got to see were twisted portrayals of how I live my life and handle my affairs. Some of that is our fault. Too few of us take any interest in making sure that we are represented fairly around the world by our celebrities and our media.

I’m one of those folks who generally doesn’t care what the rest of the world thinks about me or my nation. I do care, though, that my country is represented fairly and that has not been happening at all recently.
