“…..and what is that smell?!?”
I was driving home this evening with my window down because it was a nice night (a little bit humid, but that’s June in my neck of the woods) when I encountered The Smell.
It was a combination of fresh hot tar and fresh dead skunk. I imagine that it could have been worse (say if someone had dumped a crate of rotten eggs on the shoulder) but as bad odors go, it was definitely Olympic caliber.
I could probably shrug it off as fleeting, except that the State Highway folks are resurfacing the highway right at the end of my street and I know that, for at least the next few days there’s a very good chance that the Eau de la Hot Tar will be in my path once more. And since the highway in that area has a couple lightly wooded fields on either side, the chance of skinkification is high as well.
The good news is that at least I know what Dead Skunk Covered in Hot Tar smells like so the next time it assaults my schnoz, I won’t be so horribly surprised.
