Defending Iraq from…Okinawa?

Sorry, Jeff, I’m not fluent in Murtha either.

Apparently, today on Meet the Press, Congressman Jack Murtha – you may have heard of him – said that we could easily redeploy our troops outside of Iraq so that they could easily and quickly respond to problems inside Iraq.

He noted four places we could send our troops immediately: Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Okinawa.

Yep. Okinawa.

Because, according to Murtha:

…our fighters can fly from Okinawa very quickly. And—and—when they don’t know we’re coming. There’s no question about it. And, and where those airplanes won’t—came from I can’t tell you, but, but I’ll tell you one thing, it doesn’t take very long for them to get in with cruise missiles or with, with fighter aircraft or, or attack aircraft, it doesn’t take any time at all. So we, we have done—this one particular operation, to say that that couldn’t have done, done—it was done from the outside, for heaven’s sakes.

Yeah. Right. What the incoherent man who thinks we have magic planes said.

My best guess for what Murtha is trying to say is that we only need a few ground troops coming in from outside the country to handle any insurgency problems. So since we don’t need all those ground troops, we’ll scatter them in places where we assume we can station them. In the meantime, we’ll use the vaunted Clinton strategy of air attacks to solve the problems and we’ll use our bases a few thousand miles away to sneak up on the terrorists and get them when they least suspect it.

At least that’s my best guess. It’s not an especially coherent policy suggestion and Jeff does a brilliant job of dismantling it in three or so paragraphs, but it’s all his and he’ll mumble it in front of any audience he can.
