The Law Won’t be Enforced Today.

Our justice system isn’t perfect, but it’s better than any other.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A grand jury has declined to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Georgia, who was accused of punching a Capitol Police officer in March.

The grand jury’s decision ends the investigation into the incident, according to U.S. Attorney Kenneth Wainstein.

The grand jury refusal came despite the testimony of four witnesses who saw McKinney punch the officer in the chest with a closed fist. That tells me that the grand jury simply wasn’t interested in enforcing the law that day.

Well, that’s how it works. If the grand jury doesn’t indict, it simply doesn’t indict. No amount of evidence can sway a jury that has decided that today, the law is on vacation.

At least the U.S. Attorney in this case has appropriately decided that this is the end of the case, unlike a certain Texas prosecutor that shopped a certain case to a cople or three different grand juries until he found one that would indict. I applaud Wanstein’s integrity.

I am sorry, though, that Officer McKenna had to endure McKinney’s assault. This entire incident certainly sends the message that there is a segment of our political leadership who believes our peace officers are no more than mere inconveniences and subject to assault at their whim. That is a terrible message to send, but given how carefully her party colleagued dealt with McKinney in the days after the incident, it is a reasonable one to infer.
