Religion of….Something.

Islam may be a religion of peace or it may not. I suspect that until the legendary Moderate Muslims around the world stand up and make their voices widely and loudly heard, the Wahabists and other asorted Islamists will continue to be the public face of Islam.

Stories like this, though, do not help the contention that Islam is a peaceful religion, able to coexist with others. It only goes to bolster the contention that Islamism is the preferred mode of practicing Islam and makes moderate Muslims seems far less influential and capable of “taking back their religion” than they may be.

I would expect that some group that preaches moderation (CAIR, are you reading this?) should take a bold an unequivocal stance against the hatred the Saudi government is officially sponsoring. I would more expect our government to be firm and vocal in its opposition to the Saudi’s endorsement of hate and mayhem.

I believe in the end, it’s not going to be up to governments to lead this charge (especially since governments seem unwilling to do it). I believe it will be up to people like these guys who simply want to live their lives peaceably and in reasonable harmony with all their neighbors and friends. Perhaps folks like those musicians will get sick and tired of being the meat shields for oppressive cowards, will find ways that they can help tear down the bastions of hate, and will lead Islam into the 21st Century.
