The Things I’ve Missed
I caught a news program earlier where the hosts interviewed someone named Kellie Pickler. They said her name with some excitement, which confused me because I have no idea who she is and they acted as if not only I, but everyone else should. Turns out that Ms. Pickler was a contestant on American Idol.
Which got me thinking. I’m far from being on the edge of popular culture. Actually, I generally subscribe to John Derbyshire’s dictum on the subject. That’s not to say that I don’t get into some aspects of it, just not most of it. So just how far am I out of the pop culture loop? Well, here are some things I haven’t seen or read or heard much at all. Some of htat is just because I think it’s junk and I don’t want to waste my time. Others passed by me because I just never got on the bandwagon.
- Survivor – I believe I watched one episode, because my parents visited one day and they do watch the show, so we watched it together so they wouldn’t miss it.
- Seinfeld – I can’t say that I ever watched a complete episode.
- Friends – I might have watched a half-dozen episodes.
- Lost – Not one episode. Not even part of one.
- 24 – Nope. I know who Jack Bauer is. That’s it.
- Will and Grace – I think I’ve seen two or three episodes, whenI was visiting friends who were fans, but I’ve never taken the time to watch on my own.
- The DaVinci Code – Meh. I don’t think a lot of Dan Brown as an author.
- The Passion of the Christ – I prefer to leave some things to my imagination. I didn’t much care to see Jesus – even a Movie Jesus – beaten to within an inch of his life. I’m also not one of the folks who needed to see it to make it more “real” for me.
- American Idol – Come on, folks. I’m a musician. Why in the world would I want to watch this?
I’m sure there are more. Why don’t you tell me some of the pop culture things that have passed you by and why.
