What evidence is there that the laws are insufficient - the word of McCain or Feingold?

The government had a choice opportunity to introduce actual examples of corruption in the system and they couldn't - not one actual occurrence. That was the point that the dissenters made in the McConnell decision.

We do have checks and balances. On one hand we have elections. On the other we have political speech by the citizens in years when there aren't elections. Unfortunately, folks like John McCain have decided that previously inviolable right - a right that was seen as critical to a healthy democracy by the Founders - is subordinate to their ability to govern free from criticism they don't like.

Ok, McCain's way off on his talk about the First Amendment, but he is right about corruption. The laws in place cannot handle all the unethical behavior, especially when the legislative and executive branches of government favor one party. There is an old saying called the 'tyranny of the majority'....whichever party that is in power rules like a tyranny. That is what our government is. I'm a strong believer in checks and balances and I believe that McCain simply wants them to exist.
