Time’s Ten Best Senators? Sure….if You Love, Love, Love Them Liberals!
Time Magazine has listed it’s Ten Best Senators.
I’m hardly surprised that of that list, there is one conservative, one solidly in the center-right, and eight who are pretty staunchly liberal for their party.
Here’s the list:
* Thad Cochran
* Kent Conrad
* Dick Durbin
* Ted Kennedy
* Jon Kyl
* Carl Levin
* Richard Lugar
* John McCain
* Olympia J. Snowe
* Arlen Specter
Let’s go down that list. The only conservative there is John Kyl, hepfuly labeled in his profile as “ultraconservative”, though the word “ultraliberal” is not slapped on Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, or Carl Levin. Instead, those men gets words such as “tough”, “willing to compromise”, and “gained respect from both parties”. Not only does Kyl get the “ultraconservative” monkier, he also gets “subterfuge”. This in contrast to the wonderful likeability of Levin, the wlling bipartisan nature of Kennedy, and the extemporaneous openness of Durbin.
As for the rest, it’s hardly a tribute to conservatives to include Republicans Specter, Snowe, and McCain, who have been purposeful thorns in the side of those who believe in fiscal responsibility, halting illegal immigration, aggressively fighting the war we’re in, and the idea of judicial restraint, just to name a few. One could include Lugar among the conservatives, though he’s hardly a leading figure in the ongoing debates of the day.
Time also lists their five worst senators and that’s where you find the only “ultraliberal” label, stuck on the puss of Daniel Akaka without any reason that should be so (as opposed to Mark Dayton, who once proposed that we have a Department of Peace and Nonviolence who has amply earned that tag).
Not that Time’s biased or anything. Perish that thought.
