Hate Central

Is this the kind of person you want around you at all?

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. — In the angry life of Maryscott O’Connor, the rage begins as soon as she opens her eyes and realizes that her president is still George W. Bush. The sun has yet to rise and her family is asleep, but no matter; as soon as the realization kicks in, O’Connor, 37, is out of bed and heading toward her computer.

Really, folks. If the very first thing you do in the morning is vent your spleen about the mere fact that George Bush is President, you need serious help. If hatred is the first coherent emotion you have when you open your eyes after a night’s sleep, you shuoldn’t be posting to the internet. You should be talking to a therapist.

And what fuels her rage? From when does this unquenchable hatred arise?

“Powerlessness” is O’Connor’s explanation. “This is born of powerlessness.”

But of course. The powerlessness of an individual in a demcoratic society where you may exercise your free will to a greater degree than in any other nation on the planet is stifling. I imagine that if I pondered our repressive system of allowing any citizen not convicted of a felony to vote in national elections every two years, to campaign for any candidate they choose or, if they wish, to run for any office in the land (barring age requirements) I’d be filled with blinding inchoate rage, too.

But if I did, I’d be a certifiable danger to myself and others.

Luckily her insanity has brought her some nice friends.

“I’m insane with rage and grief.

“But I also feel more connected than I ever have.”

There’s nothing like a nice spittle-flecked apoplectic fit to make you feel like a real member of the Community of Man, eh?

Some of us join bowling leagues or churches or community organizations. Some of us have friends and go out with them on occasion and have fun. Others…well…others just gather ’round the ol’ computer monitor and pass around the Jug O’ Hate. I imagine it’s the same warm feeling that Klansmen once got when they lit up that ginormous cross in the middle of the woods or the high that John Allen Muhammad got when he pulled the trigger from the trunk of his car. It’s that same old bracing Devil’s Homebrew though it’s poured out of a different still.

Here’s the biggest shame in this whole story

The front door opens and in comes her 6-year-old son, Terry, home from school, who starts batting around a blue balloon at the other end of the living room, batting it closer to her, closer, closer. She searches through her iTunes library until she finds one of her favorite downloads — not music, but a speech by a character named Howard Beale in the movie “Network.” She presses “play” and turns up the volume. “I want you to get mad!” Beale shouts at one point. “I want you to get mad!” she shouts along, startling Terry. “What?” he says, backing away with his balloon.

And there’s your new victim-solder in the army of hate. That’s the kid who gets to see his mother’s face contorted with rage about a man she’s never met, nursing a victimization long past its expiry date, in dire need of help that she will never get because in her warm cocoon, all is well and she’s the wise and strong one. She thinks nothing of shouting along to her favorite rabble-rousing sound clips (though I wonder how the WaPo would have written about someone who preached such hatred and shouted along to tapes of this guy, or from this movie, or from something from this guys’ Greatest Hits album?) barely aware her son is right there to hear, and remember, the whole thing.

I could be mad at her, at her stupidity that masquerades as wisdom. I could get angry at the ignorance that she wears like a suit of armor. I’d could hate her right back, with just a little bit of the hate that she, I do not doubt, would level at me if she ever met me. I could tighten my humanity up into a little ball and surround it with layer after layer of hurt and hate and vengeance and violence but why? What’s the point. What will come of it? What will it change? Will I wake up one morning and find out that she and those like her have gone away? Will my hate for her cause her to change her course even a nanometer?

Of course not.

I do feel pity, though. I feel sad that she’s chosen this course for her life and that her family must endure her anger for what appears to be a pretty big part of the day. I wonder what sort of sadness must set into a man’s heart to know that when his wife wakes up, she doesn’t think of the love she has for him but of vulgar rage toward a man she’s never met.

I very much doubt that he’d feel the same for her.

    Weapons grade moonbat.

Any normal person would be embarrased to have been profiled like that.

  2. Jimmie says:

I wonder if, some years from now, she'll look back at this article and wince.

  3. Mikey says:

I guess the most disturbing thing about the article that you referenced is that the woman smokes too much. Hell, she'll die form lung cancer before she sees the way of dubbya eradicated form the hill.

The rage that you refer to is real for many. It simply manifests itself in many different ways. After reading the article, I'm a bit jealous that Ms. O'connor has the time to vent as mush as she does.

But Jimmie, the lady sure seems to get a following (lots of hits on her blog/site). Maybe you should get more angry about the liberal left. Spew some violent fire and brimstone jargon about the way God will punish us liberals for our beliefs (a la falwell).

Truth is, "we're madder than hell and we're not going to take it anymore". The sad reality, however, is that the (hate to admit it) republican, or conservative, strategists have soundly whooped the collective asses of the democrat, or liberal, strategists when concocting their political platforms.

Granted, it's a pile of elephant manure (and in most cases, donkey crap), but hey, I have to admit that Rove and the boys have got it down when reaching out to (the somewhat shallow) minds of the religious right and other conservative minds that are not benefitting financially form the real republican agenda.

You know that you're right regarding voting (and so does O'Connor), but what's mind shattering to those of us that think like O'Connor, is that so many people believe the rove rhetoric (you've heard me say it before).

So give the woman a break, let her vent. She's not strapping on any explosives and trying to get into dubbya's bedroom.

I, for one, plan to visit her blog and tell her to quit smoking!

  4. Jimmie says:

You know, Mike, you could almost convince me that you're joking about most of that. :)

  5. Mikey says:

No joke Jimmie, but humor me…just what am I joking about?

  6. Jimmie says:

Well, first, about the notion that I would become even a third as venomous as tht blogger. Man, I'm still in my right mind. I'm quite convinced that she is not.

And rage? Oh, please? Any rage that anyone feels over who the President is, is entirely of their own making and completely under their control. It's manufactured and you seem plenty smart enough to see that.

But if you're really mad, Mikey, I'd suggest that your anger ought to be directed at yourself for allowing your party to spend its time putting together actual solutions to the problems they spend all too much time pointing out. I mean, look at the Dems latest "plan". They say that if they're in power, they're going to get Osama. They don't say how. They don't even hint at what method they'll use. They just say they'll go wherever he is and get him. Their whole "plan" is full of stuff just like that. It's a wish list and you know as well as I do that they're cheap. So if you're going to get angry, don't get angry at the only team on the field with a game plan. Get angry at the guys who have barely suited up to play.

  7. mikey says:

Yo, Jimmie, let me first agree with you about the Dems and their rhetoric. But dude, bush-boy et. al. will not get osama…ain't gonna happen..and you can just let that one play out for both of us to see. btw, if osama is wasted, it's not going to be as a result of any politician in office, perioid.

Also, you may want to take a few moments to check out Maryscott O'Connor's response to the Washington Post article that you wrote your piece. Go to the source at My Left Wing (nopbody will know, and i won't say anything…promise).

The words anger, mad, rage are little more than descriptions of frustration about a great society that has the means to do so much good, yet exploits for its own gains (oh, maybe that means freedom to your side of the aisle) and waists countless billions of dollars on destruction and enriching those that need it least.

It's a major scam Jimmie, you have to know that. And we're all to blame 'cause we let it happen (yes, me included). And as you know, we could change things. But it's too cozy for us to change, and the needed sacrifice that we would have to buy in to would be too great (not really, but change through sacrifice is always a bitch).

Lastly, I respect your viewpoint even though I can't agree with it. That (legitimate) freedom is a privilege that we both enjoy. What I would like to know is how you believe that the current administration is acting in our best interests. How the bush initiatives have leveled the playing field for the haves and the have nots. I'm curious to hear your explanation (and I will listen).

Are they one of those who have those stupid PRACTICE TOLLERENCE stickers in their car windows or have the MAKE LOVE NOT WAR,MAKE FREINDS NOT ENEMIES posters or have the dumb sign with the sissy pink flower with the WAR IS NOT HEALTHY FOR CHILDREN AND OTHER LIVING THINGS?

  9. Mikey says:

Not sure about that Dirty Bird…got any extra pink flower posters you can float this way?

  13. Ben USN (Ret) says:

    Great post!

It is sad that anyone would embrace hate and rage so much,

as to be consumed by it.

The effects it will have on her little boy could be disasterous,

or at the very least, unhealthy.

My anger is directed at those terrorists who would love to kill us…

Instead of letting that anger consume me, I'm doing all I can to help fight terrorism.

Supporting the troops is number one. I also support their mission, because regardless of (unintentional) mistakes that have been made, or what one may think of the President or Congress, it is a noble mission, and it's the right thing to do.

The enemy we face, is very real, and they won't stop, unless we stop them.

So, the leftists who decide to rant and rage their frustrations about the conservatives all day, to each other, are accomplshing nothng constructive. Meanwhile, they ignore (or make excuses for) the real enemy, who we all should be united against.

I choose to do somethng constructive with my frustrations.

Rage and hyperbole for hate's sake will only destroy.

I sincerely hope that those on the left who are consumed by rage

realize that nothing good will come of it.

Man, you guys have short memories. Turn the clock back six years and recall how the right was totally around the bend about Clinton. Your distilled hatred was like a fog over the nation.

  16. Jimmie says:

How do I say this, Robert?

No. No it wasn't like "a fog over the nation". Yes, there certainly were some pretty avowed Clinton Haters who peddled crazy conspiratory videotapes, but they began and remained on the fringes of the right. They remained there because the multitude of the right denounced them and did not let them gain greater influence.

    As oppsed to today.
