Musings on April
It seems to be one of those immutable weather laws around here that once you seen police officers wearing their summer uniforms – short-sleeved shirts and their summer straw Stetsons – we’re going to get one last cool snap. You can march through the end of March with temps in the high 60s or low 70s, thus baiting Superintendents to put out the change of uniform memo, then *BANG*: we’re back in the 50s for a week or so.
It’s okay though. It’s the yearly war between a Winter that wasn’t as vicious as it really wanted to be versus a Spring that doesn’t get much time on the stage before Summer comes along and muscles it out of the way. It’ll rage on, driving all of us to distraction wondering if this is the weekend we should box up our sweaters and longjohns and haul out the shorts and t-shirts or if we’re just setting ourselves up for yet another late winter cold bug.
Not like it matters. The cold bug is going to get us anyhow. It always does. It’s another of those immutable laws of weather: no matter how warm it is in April, it’ll be cold enough, long enough, to make us sniffle our way into Palm Sunday. At least it’s good for the fine people at Kleenex, so that’s something.
I’m not taking any chances. I’m siting here in my ribbed long-sleeved shirt that’s neither sweater nor really shirt, comfortable as can be. Let Winter and Spring duke it out just outside my window. I’m safe and warm.
It may be too late, though. I already have the sniffles, dammit.
