So Now You Tell Us.

Don’t you think this article might have been more useful, say, a week ago?

The decision by Dubai Ports World to abandon its effort to take over terminal operations at six U.S. seaports was a victory for the numerous politicians who have thundered in recent days that foreign companies have no business handling U.S. port operations.

But foreign firms remain deeply embedded in nearly every major port in the country. And transferring ownership of those operations to U.S. companies could cause serious problems in an industry in which nearly all of the shipping is controlled by foreign interests. An immense amount of capital from those foreigners will be required to expand the nation’s port system in coming years as global commerce continues to burgeon.

After all, various politicians, mostly on the left (but far more on the right than there should have been) were bloviating about the “foreigners” in our ports.

I can’t help but believe that had the Post been ever the teensiest bit more journalistic in their approach to this story, the American public might have had this information before Congress scuttled the deal and pissed off a country that has a whole lot of cash they are (well…were) fairly eager to spend here.

Did I also mention that the UAE is the Arab country giving us the most active assistance in the war we’re fighting right now?

Yeah…so this story that – lo and behold! – there are foreigners all over our port oprations might have been useful in the debate Monday. Now, it’s just a testament that the Post either has the worst sense of timing for a major newspaper, was too dumb to notice that this story might have helped provide information in a vital debate, or was on the side of the deal-scuttlers all along.

  1. Dubai Ports, The Deal Is Dead

Bush Administration and their arrogant, cavalier attitude toward this deal does not install confidence, and to have threatened with a veto had to be the biggest ‘icing on the cake’ blunder of all. Karl Rove, who seems to have the instincts of a turtl…
