Oh, the Things We Knew.
I understand that the most important story in the world right now is why Dick Cheney didn’t place personal phone calls to David Sanger and David Gregory to let them know that he had just accidentally shot his friend. Because, you know….ABUSE OF POWER, ARROGANT SECRECY, and all that.
Still, I have to think that
this story might have merited a little front page action.
WASHINGTON Feb 14, 2006 (AP)— Pre-Sept. 11 intelligence conducted by a secret military unit identified terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta 13 different times, a congressman said Tuesday.
During a Capitol Hill news conference, Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., said the unit code-named “Able Danger” also identified “a problem” in Yemen two weeks before the attack on the USS Cole. It knew the problem was tied into the port of Aden and involved a U.S. platform, but the ship commander was not made aware of it, Weldon said.
The suicide bombing of the Cole killed 17 sailors on Oct. 12, 2000.
I mean, I think it ought to merit a bit of attention, but obviously I’m not one of the MSM flock who thinks that its worse to be secretive and successful when it comes to national security than to be open and incompetent like the last one.
To me, that explains much of the difference in the media coverage of this administration as compared to the last. Clinton’s presidency was a series of unmitigated national security disasters, where failure after failure was given the toreador treatment by the MSM because the administration was open and chummy with the press corps. In contrast, the only thing the press corps cares about now is the ephemeral “right to know”, as opposed to the more concrete “right not to be incinerated”. That’s why Dick Cheney’s hunting accident is such a big deal. It’s another example of this administration cutting out the useful idiots of the Washington press corps and conducting its business with the best interests of the involved individuals in mind.
But yeah. Able Danger. Who needs to hear anything about that?
