It’s a Proverb because It’s True.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
Yes, filibustering Judge Alito is a stupendously horrible idea. The general pubic sees Samuel Alito as an eminently fair man whose intelligence and judicial demeanor suggests he’d make a superlative Associate Justice.
Yet, some Democratic fringe dwellers want to filibuster him to make a point. That point is, whether they like it or not, that instead of Alito being the one outside the mainstream, it’s them who are so far out of the mainstream that they couldn’t find it with the Hubble and a thousand years to look. It’s just that simple.
America doesn’t want a Supreme Court that takes us the cause du jour. They don’t want judges who decide that they can make the law better than elected legislators. They want judges who simply hear the case presented to them, apply the laws to that case, and find in accordance with those laws. Nothing more and nothing less.
Most of the left simply doesn’t understand that. I wish I could explain why they don’t, but they don’t. They still fancy a world that’s run by an unelected elite, handpicked by them, of course, that answers to no one but them. Basically, they want their own soft brand of tyranny instead of the democratic system under which we’ve lived for well over two centuries.
Think tyranny is too strong a word? Think about it for a second. What else would you call a government where those who held the power to make or change the laws as they will answered to no electorate and were subject in no way to the will of the people, indeed who reversed the will of the people when it didn’t suit their own governing purposes. That’s tyranny no matter how you want to dress it up and perfume it to look like something else.
What’s most instructive about the Americablog post is that the writer is arguing not from the view of what will be good for the country but what will be good for the Democratic party. I get the distinct impression that the author could care less what happens to the rest of the nation so long as his party gained some smidgen of political advantage. That stinks to high Heaven, but what else does the left really have? Power is the thing, not the betterment of the nation and certainly not the strengthening of our democracy.
PLAYING POLITICS UPDATE: Hey, guys, I’m sure that wounded troops make great political tools but don’t you think it’s just the teensiest bit low-class to hide behind them?
