Oooo…Lookit the Controversial Rock Star.

Some will say Kanye West is courageous for posing as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. I say the one-hit wonder has jumped the shark.

The biggest problem I have with the magazine cover is that it’s chickenshit. It takes absolutely no courage at all to portray yourself as Jesus. Christians won’t do more than write letters, make some phone calls, and, at worst, call for a boycott. Now, if he had posed as Muhammed, that would have taken courage. At least Christians won’t kidnap you, saw off your head, and videotape it. I dare say, though, that neither West nor Rolling Stone has the cojones for that. They like the safe edginess – the kind that thinks that mocking Jesus is still hip and cool and will get them in trouble with the vast unwashed Red-State masses, but not any kind of real trouble.

This is par for the course for West. Go back and listen to Kanye’s tremulous stammering as he told the world that President Bush hates blacks. That’s not the demeanor of a courageous man. That’s the demeanor of a kid who creeps hesitantly up to the porch of the widow lady to light the paper bag of poo only because he wants the adoration of the bigger boys in his neighborhood.

This stunt irritates me not because it’s controversial in any real way but because it’s boring and trite. The Beatles did it better and edgier three decades ago. Get a new schtick, Kanye.

Better yet, make an album that has more than one decent song on it.
