Schumer Hides Behind a Corpse to Call Alito a Segregationist

Chuck Schumer took himself out of the debate over Judge Alito’s nomination by using the corpse of Rosa Parks as a political prop and by invoking segregation.

SCHUMER: Good morning, everybody.

This morning I went and visited Rosa Parks in the Capitol Rotunda to pay my respects.

Being in the presence of Ms. Parks was awe-inspiring. This was a woman who changed history with one thin dime. She paid her fare and took her rightful seat on the bus and America was never the same again.

Like Rosa Parks, Judge Alito will be able to change history by virtue of where he sits. The real question today is whether Judge Alito would use his seat on the bench, just as Rosa Parks used her seat on the bus, to change history for the better or whether he would use that seat to reverse much of what Rosa Parks and so many others fought so hard and for so long to put in place.

This has to be the rule, folks. If someone is wearing a hood and trying to burn a cross, then you may say they want to bring back segregation. If someone is a Federal Judge, unanimously approved by the Senate for that position in 1990 (Chuck Schumer, by the way, was one of the people who approved him), then you may not ever say that person wants to bring back segregation unless they actually try to bring back segregation.

Senator Schumer made an idiotic, but fairly typical, response to Judge Alito’s nomination. Unfortunately, the way I look at things, this entirely disqualifies him from speaking with any authority on the subject until he apologizes for the accusation.

I think it would be a fine idea for all of us to completely ignore the Slandering Senator until he makes that apology.

Oh sure, I realize that some might argue that this is politics as usual, but it isn’t. It’s beyond the pale. It was beyond the pale for more than two-hundred years before Senator Ted Kennedy made almost the exact same accusation against Robert Bork. Since then, it’s been hauled out over and over and over again until it’s nearly hackneyed.

Well, it ain’t hackneyed. It’s a serious thing to say. It’s a hard accusation to accuse someone of being a racist who is so unashamed of his racism that he tries to bring back segregation from his perch atop the Federal Judiciary right in front of God and everyone. He’s not just accusing Judge Alito of being a racist; he’s accusing him of being an arrogant unapologetic racist.

You know, like the kind Schumer’s fellow Senator Robert Byrd has been pretty much his entire Senate career.

Senator Schumer needs to apologize for his insinuated accusation and he needs to do so publicly where Judge Alito and his family can hear it. He should also apologize to the family of Rosa Parks for using the body of that frail old woman before she was even in the ground. We ought to insist on nothing less.
