Reid Likes Miers, Why Not You?

Senator Herry Reid seems mighty pleased with the Harriet Miers choice.

“I think that’s a plus, not a minus. Speaking recently with SCOTUS justices, three of them, they said what this Court needs is people who have not been through the court process. Harriett Myers has served with distinction as a trial lawyer. That’s what I am, a trial lawyer. Anyone who has that background makes me feel good.”

Oh goodie. The guy who has no problem whatsoever ripping conservatives and Republicans in public and calling the President names in front of TV cameras likes the pick.

Let me ask you. If you’re even remotely conservative does this quote make you more or less comfortable with the nomination?

And while I’m asking questions, let me toss another one out there. The Anchoress says that Miers may well be Derek Jeter, that she has intangibles that we just can’t see but that, because he knows her so well, the President sees clearly. Villanous Cassandra makes much the same point in her comments, but from a different angle.

Okay, I’ll buy that. I’ll grant that the President knows her and thinks she’ll be a fine SCOTUS Justice.

That means, though, that we have to trust the President’s take on the Constitution. Which I don’t. I remember Campaign Finance reform – the bill that the President said the Supreme Court would surely strike down. It didn’t. We lost a black-line constitutional right thanks in large part to the President’s abdication of his Constitutional right.

How about Katrina and the President responding to moonbat pressure by looking into ways for the Federal Government to just shoulder aside the local and state governments and take over pretty much whenever they feel the other folks aren’t up to the job?

Any movement by the President on remedying the execrable Kelo decision. Has he suggested any sort of Congressional action?

How about the Medical marijuana decision (I believe it was Raich)? I seem to recall the administration favoring a decision that essentially made the Interstate Commerce Clause take precedent even when there’s no “inter” involved.

I don’t trust the President’s constitutional instincts in the least. Then again, one of the biggest reasons I voted for him is because he promised to nominate people for SCOTUS like Scalia and Thomas. Had he said that we’d just have to trust him, I would have seriously reconsidered my vote.

How can you blame the president for shoddy reasoning by the court?

At least you didnt' criticize my boy, Jeter! :-)

  2. Jimmie says:

The President gets blame because many of these issues should never have gone to an iffy court. Campaign Finance reform should have died on his desk. The President should have stepped out of the way of the states on the medical marijuana case – it had no business in it to begin with. He should have responded to this FEMA nonsense by saying that if people want the Feds to run hurricane relief, they should change the Constitution to allow it.

he's been dropping the ball over and over again.

Miers may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. But if all I have to go on is Bush's Constitutional judgement, I'll pass.

Linked. :-) At least no one can say I choose my friends by how much they agree with me! LOL

  4. Jimmie says:

Anchoress, I hope dearly that I'm wrong. I don't know that this country can stand another 30 years of the kind of silliness we've seen out of SCOTUS.

I pray that the President is right. I just don't know that I can trust him based on his track record on the subject. If you, or anyone, can give me a good reason to do so, I will.

  5. But then, Miers might just be another unqualified crony of the new Republicanism. Unswerving Party loyalty isn't just for commies anymore!

  6. [...] Jimmie at Sundries Shack is not agreeing with me which is at least proof that I don’t count my friends by how many times they nod their heads! [...]

    Neither.

*oy* Does the poster calling itself "Ghost Dansing" hang out here often? I'm familiar with its work.
