On Harriet, Hurt, and a Huffy.
I was having a conversation with one of my blogging friends tonight. We were talking about Harriet Miers (of course!) and why some conversatives are so angry. After an hour or so of back and forth, she finally came out with this.
You’re angry. You’re entitled to your anger.
I’m not angry, but I am protective of the guy [President Bush] because the other side is so ridiculously obnoxious to him. I admit that.
I’m just saying let’s wait and see. I tend to always look at things and think…”what is the part the supernatural is playing in this, and what should I be looking for”?
Most of the time, I find it. Haven’t found it here yet, but it’s only been 14 hours!
All this sound and fury for 14 straight hours. She’d better be as tough as Bush says, or she won’t survive another day!
Here’s my reply (and I”m cleaning it up a bit because it did come after an hour or so of back and forth and should be tidied up a bit so it’s more understandable. I’m posting it because she thought it was worthy of wider circulation. I hope that perhaps others – maybe even the White House – might read this and understand why folks like me are so fired up about this.
Here’s what I think tonight about the Miers nomination:
Oddly enough, I’m not really angry.
I’m hurt. I feel betrayed.
This was supposed to be The Nominee – the one that folks like me have been waiting on for 5 years, the one we could defend with a clear conscience against all comers on beliefs and rock-solid Constitutional grounds. This would be the nominee that would make us feel good for eating dirt on the budget and McCain/Feingold and all those things we weren’t all that hot about but defended him anyhow because he was close enough.
This was supposed to be the one George Bush promised us.
But it’s not. It’s someone else.
What I feel today is kind of like your Dad promising you a new Schwinn mountain bike for Christmas in March providing you were good and you did all your chores and you worked extra hard on your schoolwork and you really went above and beyond. You did all of that. You really worked hard. You made sacrifices. You did everything you were asked plus some. Come Christmas Day you ran down to the tree and found a Huffy 3-speed. Sure it’s a nice bike. But it’s not what you worked so hard to get. It’s not what he promised you.
Yeah, you smile and hug Dad and ride the bike every day and when the other kids tease you because you’d been telling them for months that you were going to get that Schwinn you tell them to get lost because your Dad got it for you and it’s a great bike and you love it. But it’s not the same. It hurts.
I just feel hurt. I trusted the guy and I got a Huffy.
UPDATE: Hugh Hewitt just doesn’t get it at all. I doubt, from reading his last few posts, that he ever will.

While I (looking for a Brown nomination myself) can understand the hurt and disappointment, I wonder if the Schwinn that so many have been waiting for was in fact, THE FIGHT.
And given DeLay's problems with moonbat procecutors, and RINOs loose in the Senate, and the media smear machine wound up to high RPMs, this may be an interesting flanking of the Dems – if, and the if is bigger than I had thought, the base accepts this nomination with the grace you describe in riding the bike and defending your Dad's purchase.
If instead, the base wrecks the bike in a fit of anger and disappointment, then we are without a bike. Therefore, I am swallowing my disappointment and waiting to see what unfolds.
[...] But…if you have not yet had enough Miers, Jeanette has written a let’s cut through the vale of tears and see what’s what sort of post that I think is pretty dang good, and Brainstorming has a rather large round-up as well, and Hugh Hewitt is asking if you trust some other conservatives who are supporting Miers, and Patrick Ruffini has positive things to say. Jimmie Bise, on the other hand, feels like he was promised a ten-speed and got a Huffy and Betsy Newmark has a round-up of the positive folks, including this piece by Lorie, and she concludes wishing for more – even if Miers has made an unbreakable vow with Bush. Go, read it! [...]
As long as Mrs. Unknown Texas Lawyer-chick upholds the constitution, I am satisfied. I don't care about anything else, really.
If she pisses off MoveOn.org, that's a plus too.
I wish W would have appointed a non-lawyer conservative constitutional scholar or something like that to really tell everyone everywhere the Supreme Court is about deciding constitutional issues.
[...] I give Doug points for anger-induced moxie, but I still think Jimmie Bise gets the prize, because he uses a good analogy. [...]

Was it The Nominee, or The Fight?
In fact, with Roberts perhaps only 80% to actually overturn Roe (who really knows???), I put Miers at 90% to do so.
The "fact" is MY estimate. There is no "fact" about the future decisions of an SC Justice. That's where uncertainty comes in.
We can NOT get the Schwinn until Roe is overturned. NONE can give it to us in the nomination, unless a Brown or Luttig is willing to go on record in the hearings against Roe, and endure The Fight.
The Gang of 7 (of 14) seem to say Bush & Reps would lose such a fight. (I want the Fight — and to Win.) I blame the Gang of 7 of 14.
