Afghanistan Votes Again.
The people of Afghanistan have thrown another thundering punch to the guts of the terrorists and their bile-fattened sympathizers by voting in the first legislative elections in the country in 36 years and the second fully free and demcoratic election in the country’s history (a little fact that the Post fails to note).
It seems that some were mystified by relatively heavy early voting in the south.
In a surprising twist, Nadery said his observers had seen a large early morning turnout in several provinces of the south, such as Paktika, Paktia and Khost, where suspected insurgents linked to the ousted extremist Islamic Taliban have been carrying out weekly roadside bombings and assassinations. Their targets have included local officials, clerics supportive of the government and Afghan and international military forces.
Nadery said this suggested that those voters across the country who chose to stay home may have been motivated less by fear than by bewilderment at the vast array of contenders.
Yep, free people aren’t cowed from voting by bloodthirsty thugs and their simpering supporters. And if the turnout was lower than expected, it is worth remembering Nagery’s supposition that perhaps there were too many candidates – 5700 all told.
Too many candidates in a democratic election in Afghanistan. How sweet a sentence is that to write?
And I can’t overestimate the admiration I have for President Karzei either.
President Hamid Karzai hailed the vote, saying “the Afghan people have proven once again that they know their interest, that they can work for tomorrow, that they have a vision and that they have voted for that vision.”
Seems they’re getting the hang of the whole democracy thing faster than a whole lot of people thought they could.
Rock on Mr. President.
