Just a Gas-Related Thought

Here’ssomething to consider, with gasoline prices up over $3.00/gallon and some stations closing because they’ve run out of gas.

Delivery drivers, especially pizza delivery drivers, get paid a relative pittance for “mileage”. Some places pay them a percentage of the total order price. Some pay a flat rate. Generally, it’s not enough to cover the gasoline and the wear and tear on a vehicle. Also, generally, they don’t drive the best cars on the planet.

My brother manages a local pizza chain restaurant and tonight – a busy Friday night when the drivers can expect to make their best money – he was four drivers short. His drivres are telling him that they can’t afford to keep their cars on the road for the money they make (which is usually minimum wage, or slightly over, plus tips and mileage). I can attest to that. I was a part-time Pizza Stud fairly recently for about three years. My biggest expense was gasoline and there were plenty of days when my tips just barely covered the tank of gas I had to buy.

It’s just someting to keep in mind over the next couple of months when you order out. Kick in an extra buck or two on the tip. If you’re strapped for cash, forego the extra order of egg rolls, or that second or topping on the pizza to drop the driver an extra buck or two. It all adds up. An extra 20 bucks a night can mean a whole tank of gas to a driver and will keep them on the road.

Just something to think about.

  1. Not a bad point. I gave my car up at the beginning of the summer, and don't plan to drive one again until next spring.

If I lived in an area with a comprehensive mass-transit system, I'd do the same thing. Unfortunately, between work and school, I have to drive more than I want.
