Big Bunker Busted.

| June 5, 2005

Here’s a bit of very good news.

BAGHDAD, June 4 — U.S. and Iraqi forces searching Iraq’s western province of Anbar on Saturday uncovered a network of bunkers hidden in a vast underground quarry and equipped with air conditioning, food and a wide assortment of weapons, a Marine spokesman said.

The quarry, near the town of Karmah, was as long as three football fields and had been divided into rooms that apparently had housed insurgents, the spokesman, Capt. Jeffrey S. Pool, said in a statement.

“Within the various rooms making up the facility, Iraqi security and coalition forces discovered four fully furnished living spaces, a kitchen with fresh food, two shower facilities and a working air conditioner,” Pool said.

The weapons stored in the facility included mortars, artillery shells and rockets, according to Pool, who said night-vision goggles and cell phones were also found.

The facility was huge – 300 yards long and a bit under 200 yards wide – and, though no one was in it at the time of the raid, you have to wonder how recently it had been occupied since it was stocked with fresh food.

This is a heck of a find for US and Iraqi forces and a heck of a blow to the insurgents. it makes me wonder, though, how many other such facilities that Saddam Hussein built (because you don’t think the insurgents built this under a rock quarry all by themselves in a year or so unnoticed, do you?) will be uncovered as his trial approaches.

I also wonder where all that military-grade equipment came from.
