Abortion: It’s Just The Funny
Do we really have to tolerate an on-air contest to see who has had the largest number of abortions? My guess is that the overwhelming reaction to this story is going to be that this is one of those things that I – and a lot of other folks – am going to have to just shut up and take.
We’ll hear the usual argument that says “Hey! Freedom of Speech!”. We won’t hear that part of that argument that always seems to be left out: the part of that Freedom which says “…but common sense and good citizenship pretty much requires that you don’t say every stupid thing that comes to your mind”.
We’ll hear about how if you don’t like what’s on the radio, you can just turn the dial. We won’t likely hear how this was broadcast on the airwaves we own and on which stations like DC-101 operate only because we, the people, allow them. We also won’t hear that Freedom of Speech doesn’t necessarily extend to commerce – that we can and do limit what we hear on the radio and that, in the end, the responsibility for what is broadcast over our airwaves is our responsibility. We won’t hear that turning off the dial sure seems like sticking our heads.
We’ll hear a lot, but what we won’t hear a lot of is any sort of wondering how we’ve grown so coarse that an abortion contest is considered fine morning radio show fare.
