Captain Ed catches Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid dong a little old-fashioned McCarthyite character assassination on a judicial nominee and maybe breaking the law at the same time.

Harry Reid has apparently decided to go down the Howard Dean path of “if you can’t beat ‘em, call ‘em bad names, drag their reputations through the mud, and don’t actually talk about your losing position on the issues” route.

This strategy’s a big winner with the Democratic base but it’s big, fat loser with the majority Americans.

That explains why he’s the minority leader in the Senate.
