The View from the Bottom
You know, some days it just stinks being one of the tiny bloggers. Here’s a good case in point.
Today, Glenn Reynolds linked to a story from Captain’s Quarters on the Syria Addendum to the Duelfer Report. Captain Ed made the same fundamental point I did (though via a slightly different route and with a different target). He made his post this morning and I made mine yesterday morning.
I’m not ragging on Captain Ed here. I think he’s one of the finest bloggers out there and he was one of those folks who inspired my entry into the blogosphere. He’s done great work, especially in the past year, and he deserves far more kudos than he’s gotten.
I just sit envious of his getting his gazillionth Instalanche while I’m scraping to get 160 visitors a day. Hey, it’s not like Instapundit doesn’t know who I am. He’s linked me a couple times before. I’m not on his blogroll that I can see, but hey, maybe I’m not his regular cup of tea. Sure, envy’s one of those things that I’m not supposed to do, but it does get trying at times writing to a teeny audience and watching others get the big links and the wider exposure over and over again.
I’m just saying that The Shack isn’t a bad blog, even if it’s not a polished and professional product. It is, I can confidently say, a far sight better than the bloated celeb-fest that Arianna Huffington is about to inflict on the Internet. The occasional link wouldn’t kill folks like Reynolds, would it?
Or is this just a pathetic whine from a blogger who has yet to realize that his rightful place is so far out on the tail that he can’t see the head. I hope it’s not that, but from my point of view, it’s hard to tell.

I love your blog. If you have something really good, why don't you email Glenn with it? Anyway, you may feel pathetic but I'm more! I have found that the blogs I read the most are the smaller ones. Captain Ed is really good, but many of the more popular ones simply don't have the quality of the smaller ones.

Hey, I just blogrolled you, and you can expect a Pointfivealanche (unfortunately, that's only one visitor).

LaShawn directed me your way.
Did you email Captain Ed as well as update your post with a link to his? This is a simple nicety that "scores points" toward building a name for yourself.
I have a teeny-tiny little livejournal that I'm looking at upgrading to a "real blog" sometime before fall. I once sent Reynolds an email linking to a post on my journal, telling him "I'm not looking for a link, but I think you should link to so-and-so's recent series of posts." The next day he posted a link to the guy saying, "If you're not reading so-and-so lately, why aren't you?" I do that with a few other heavy bloggers as well, usually suggesting that they might be interested in checking into such-and-such issue.
Maybe once I upgrade I'll start begging for links, but in the meantime I just try to get people to read something interesting that I wrote in the hopes that they'll start to recognize my name and, hopefully, think kindly of me. That way when I start begging they just might link me (chuckle).
Lornkanaga – Yep, Captain Ed did a post update (he caught my trackback) and linked up with me. He's a good guy about doing that and he's one of the "big bloggers" who does a very good job of looking at a lot of the "little guys" and finding some real gems.
MaxedOutMama – I've done the e-mail thing a time or three but it doesn't often bear fruit with most of the big guys. To their credit, the ones who really do respond well to e-mail requests are Captain Ed, Michelle Malkin, and PowerLine. Interestingly enough, they're also on my "read every day" list (as are you and why I've not blogrolled you to this point is beyond me, but I've recitifed that today).
PointFive – Good blog you have there, by the way. You are blogrolled!
I like your site and read it every day. From one micro-blogger to another, don't despair. I like to believe we have a mostly superior product. Hey, I wrote a piece responding to Hugh Hewitt, and while I'm not blogrolled there, he did link my blogsite name on one of his posts last week and it was good for just under 3000 hits in three days. It's slowed down mostly now, but it was fun while it lasted. What drives me nuts is how few hits lead to comments. But I do have my loyal few who will comment, so… for now that's great.
Yeah…commenting. That's something that doesn't happen often here either. I'm not sure why that is. If I figure it out I'm goign to bottle it and sell it, I think.
Hugh is good for doing great link roundups when he throws a topis out there for discussion. I saw the post of yours to which he linked and it was quite good. I'm surprised that more folks didn't pick it up and run with it.
Then again, I enjoy your blog also since I discovered it (through a trackback, of all things!) and I don't think you're going to be a microblogger for too much longer.

After 10 months of almost daily writing, I'm discouraged by not attracting more readers, as well. But…I keep reminding myself that writing is worth doing for its own sake. I always had ideas; now I'm disciplining myself to put them down in words. Even if others aren't reading, it's still worth doing. I also have to remind myself to enjoy the writing, and not to knock myself out, thinking that I have to write something every day. http://www.downingworld.com

Here, here. I agree. It can be frustrating, but at the same time, it confirms to me that I'm on the same wavelength with others that I admire.
Hey, Jimmie! I know I haven't commented here in a while, but wanted to add my voice in hopes of establishing the irony of THIS post being flooded with comments.

New Blogs, Carnivals and Other Things
So much is happening in the blogosphere, I can’t keep up. New blogs are created every day and veteran bloggers are writing about interesting topics. I have time to keep up with only a few Christian and political blogs, and that’s not even the tip of …
Dave, you are the wind beneath my wings.

Checked out your site via La Shawn's. Your comments were valuable input about what to expect. Just started my blog last week.
Liked dowingworld's comment about about writing for it's own sake.
Like your site. Unique concept.

I'd run over my mother for 160 visitors a MONTH. I have two regular readers and I'm linked at one blog.
I think there's so many blogs now that to get noticed, you have to be a big deal somewhere else BEFORE you launch a blog. Basically, my blog accomplishes one thing: sharpens my typing skills.

I've been posting for over five years. I feel your pain. It's tough knowing you've put your heart and soul onto a weblog just to see some "whippersnapper" join the fad and immediately hit it big.
I can't offer any advice, because I too have been frustrated with how to increase readers. Just keep on posting, trackbacking, e-mailing people about your quality posts (send me stuff), and commenting. With some luck you'll get the attention you deserve.
Boggles the mind doesn't it? No need to worry or wonder too much though… I always read you wayyyyy before the others… Your consistency and quality and heart are far better….Do any of those fine bloggers have their very own group of babes??? Hmmmm…I think not….
