The Supremes Say No

| March 24, 2005 | Comments (0)

The Supreme Court has just now declined to hear the Terri Schaivo case without explanation.

This means the end, I think, for Terri. The Florida legislature has tried to pass a couple bills, neither of which passed. Governor Jeb Bush also petitioned Judge Greer to unseal the records in the case so they can be reviewed. The judge refused that request.

Really, I’m puzzled by the latter refusal. The one overarching problem I’ve had with this case is Judge Greer’s steadfast refusal to allow any factual review of his initial finding. Surely, in this country, we don’t allow one man to hold the fate of any court proceeding in his hand, do we?

I also have some thoughts on the peripheral issues floating around the Schaivo case (the issue of Congressional involvement and the “sanctity of marriage” issue chiefly) I’ll address in the next day or so as well.
