I Am Not Comforted
So Russia is going to help Iran go nuclear. Oops! I meant “obtain civilian nuclear technology” because, of course, Russia is foursquare against their longtime ally actually getting nuclear weapons. Absolutely. Nyet on that, Comrade!
So, in a further step toward becoming the International Society of Lemmings, the EU has OKed the deal. It’s a good thing, the EU says, that Russia’s doing this – or at least not a bad thing.
Why is the EU so sure that this deal, which will send uranium to Iran on the condition that Iran sends back spent fuel and never, ever, ever holds back any of it to use in nuclear weapons like they’ve said they intend on doing for months and months, is going to work out well? Why, because both sides have given the world a pinky-shake promise that they’ll follow the rules.
Emma Udwin (eds: female), external relations spokeswoman at the Commission, told reporters in Brussels on 28 February that the two approaches are compatible. “Insofar as we have the details,” Udwin said, “our understanding is that the recent deal between Iran and Russia is compatible with our own approach, since both sides have made it clear that they will fully respect international rules and regulations on non-proliferation, and most importantly that Bushehr will operate under the close supervision of the IAEA [the International Atomic Energy Agency].”
Oh, well heck. In that case, let’s all go to sleep nice and secure in the confidence that the IAEA is going to be all over this deal just like they were in Iraq and North Korea and Libya.
I’m not quite as easily comforted as the EU, it appears.
