Get Wet!
PowerLine caught a photo off of Yahoo’s photo page featuing one of the comlier people participating in this year’s Polar Bear Plunge in Annapolis, MD. I figured I’d let you all in on what that was about, since it s for a prety good cause.
The Polar Bear Plunge is one of three events sponsored largely by the Maryland State Police to raise money for the Maryland Special Olympics. They all take place in the winter. The first one was in mid-December in the Potomac River and the next one happens on February 26th in Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland. Trust me, it will be very cold out there. The lake is in the Maryland portion of the Allegany Mountains. There’ll be snow on the ground and they may have to break ice on the lake enough for the plungers to get into the water. Most of the folks out there shivering in the Chesapeake Bay today will be at all three events during the year and each will raise hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
They do pretty well and get great press. I proud to say that a lot of people who participate, either as waterborne security and emergency medical personnel or as actual Plungers who’ve raised money for the Special Olympics are my co-workers. It’s a good cause and if you have a spare buck or two in the next month, they could certainly use them.
