My Money Disclosure Policy

| January 15, 2005 | Comments (1)

In light of the “cash for opinions” flaps cropping up Education with radio and TV commentator Armstrong Williams and lefty-blogs Kos and MyDD, I’ve decided to give you my own policy on taking money.

I don’t take money for The Shack. I’ve never taken money, mostly because no one has ever offered me money. In fact, I don’t even run BlogAds, though that’s going to change relatively soon. I get a whopping hundred or so visitors a day, so, really, The Shack is far too small a fish in too large a pond to get the attention of the big money folks.

But, I aspire to a larger readership. And when that happens, I can’t say I won’t take money in some sort of advertising, or sponsorship. In fact, I can pretty much tell you right now that I will. If some politico wants to back up a tractor-trailer full of loot up to my door, I’m not even going to tell them to keep the tires off the grass. Lots of loot can buy hours and hours of landscaping.

But I will fully disclose who pays me and the terms under which they do. I’m not going to give some snootier-than-thou “disclaimer” that says that sure, I take money, but I’m not going to tell you from whom and under what terms like Kos did. I’m not going to shill completely for a candidate for cash like the guys at the Thune vs Daschle blog did. I’m not going to take money to pimp some harebrained administration plan like “No Child Left Behind” like Armstrong Williams did.

I have my opinions and thought many of them have changed over the course of my life and many of them will continue to change as I learn more and grow older and wiser, they’re not going to change because the Monopoly Guy showed up and gave me the deed to Boardwalk with all the houses and a hotel. My opinions are mine and the only thing for sale about them is where I tell people what they are. So if someone wants to pay me for opinions I’m already going to voice here, or to give me a bigger megaphone, that’s just fine. My e-mail address is at the upper left of the blog and I’m not very expensive. But if someone wants to give me money to change an opinion I already have, or to give me a new one, well….that just ain’t gonna happen.

Nicely said. It would be nice if I could see a cash-loaded truck start backing into my driveway; we need a new airconditioner. ;)
