Arson Probe Focuses on Revenge

| December 21, 2004 | Comments (0)

The big arson investigation that’s put my home county on the national map the last month or so is grinding along, with multiple suspects under arrest and the revenge motive taking the lead.

I have to say, though, having watched a few news reports on the story where I’ve gotten to see the suspects, hear what a couple associates have had to say, and listen to their friends and relatives, that I’m just not on the “revenge” bandwagon.

There’s still a definite nagging tickle in the back of my mind that says this crime was racially-motivated. I can’t put any firm evidence to that idea, except to say that I know this country pretty well and I’ve dealt with people just like those who have been arrested. Sure, it’s stereotyping, but one of the reasons we stereotype is because it’s wrong far more than it’s right. Regardless, the racism angle still feels very right to me on this.

Sure I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t bet that I am.
