Here’s Something to Tell Your Kids

Today, Afghanistan swore in her first democratically-elected President, Mohammed Karzai.

Three years ago, Afghanistan was one of the world’s most repressive regimes as well as one of the most active sponsors of terrorism around the world. It was thought by many that the country would always be this way and that there would be no way to stop what was happening. Others of us thought differently.

Today, she is free and no longer exporting killers to the rest of the world.

The country is still a work in progress, but what country isn’t?

While you’re reading the article, pay a little bit of attention to the photo and caption: “Hamid Karzai prays during his swearing-in ceremony”.

Huh…you don’t say. “Prays during his swearing-in ceremony”? A public display of religion by a government figure, during a government ceremony? And in a country new to the very concept of “freedom of religion”? How can we endure this? Surely Karzai, like George Bush, is the Taliban come back to enslave the Afghan people in an oppressive and dictatorial religious code!

What? You mean there really was a Taliban and they’re not in power anymore and Karzai is the one the people chose to replace them?

Well, never mind then.
