In a move that’s not a great surprise, Tom Ridge, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, has tendered his resignation. Some are suggesting that a likely successor could be former Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III, current Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, or perhaps former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
In all, I think Ridge did a good job getting the fledgeling agency up and running. DHS is far from perfect and I, personally, wold rather it had not been created, but all in all, Ridge did just fine. We can thank him (and former Attorney General John Ashcroft) largely for not having sustained a terrorist attack since 9/11. DHS does have a long way to go on border security and the problem of illegal immigration, but I’m not ready to castigate Ridge and I wish him very well.
