What a Great Idea: Get Well Fidel!

| November 24, 2004 | Comments (2)

Dean Esmay, as usual, sees a good idea and makes it better.

Activist Walter Lippmann has decided we didn’t give enough sympathy to Fidel Castro when he fell and injured his knee. Lippmann set up an e-mail account where we all could send our best wishes.

Dean’s turned it into a contest. The person who sends the very best condolence note will get a whole day as a guest blogger on Dean’s World.

Cool prize, huh? I couldn’t resist the lure of the prize so here’s my entry:

Dear Exalted Leader,

I was very sorry to hear of your recent injury. I can only imagine the pain the news caused the people of Cuba. I am sure that today they wish that you had broken something more vital than your knee, such as your neck or your skull. They would probably have expressed this sentiment themselves, except that every time one of them says anything to oppose you, they end up in prison and no one hears from them again.

Please, for the betterment of your people and for those languishing in your jails, the next time you slip and fall, try to do so head-first and from a great height.

Sincerely,

PS. I hope you understand the great sacrifice we all will have to endure once you do finally cack off. We fully expect that Barbra Streisand will record a tribute album and I’m sure you’ll agree that a Spanish version of “People Who Need People” is a torture more horrible than anything you’ve personally devised.

Babalu Blog has a few great jumping-off points.

Go enter the contest. Someone will win. It could be you!

    Dear Mr. Castro,

It is unfortunate that you survived your injury. Had you died Cuba might finally have had free elections, free immigration, free speech.

You lived, however, permitting useful idiots in America, like Mr. Lippman, to wish you a quick recovery.

So long as Fidel Castro lives, Cuba continues to die.

    Sincerely yours,

    Mark Nicodemo
