Post-Debate Thoughts
Here are some of the comments I want to make about the latest debate now that it’s over.
First, Bush won. No contest. He took an early lead and never gave it up, even though he whiffed a couple questions right in the middle. Luckily for him, so did Kerry.
Oh, and Robbie noted in the comments to my debate post that these guys must have coordinated outfits. Good call, Robbie!
Kerry had a really bad debate. He said, at points:
- We ahve a right to socialized drugs from Canada.
- He’d revoke the tax cut and use it to pay for both his health care plan and his social security plan.
- He wouldn’t appoint judges that would take way our Constitutional rights, or the rights the courts give us (apparently Kerry believes them to be equal), but he’s fine with taking away some of our Second Amendment rights.
- Kerry has no problem at all outing Cheney’s fdaughter, just like Edwards did. According to Jim Angle on Fox, when he did that there was an audible groan from the audience, from his vantage point. Kerry also seemed pretty uncomfortable saying the word “lesbian”/
- Kerry’s a Catholic, and a good one, but he has no problem going against the church on abortion. Oddly enough, he wasn’t nearly as strong in his profession of being a good Catholic when answering a question about his faith. Why is that, I wonder?
- Kerry actually can make a joke – even a good one. But it was late in the game.
- Kerry knows even less about immigration than the President does.
- Kerry’s closing about his mother telling him “Integrity. Integrity. Integrity.” on her death bed when he told her he was going to run for President. That struck me as really creepy and made me wonder if the story was true. What mother would remind her son of integrity on her death bed? Did he need reminding?
I think when we go back and look at this debate in a couple days, it’s going to be even more apparent how strong the president was and how Kerry never managed to rock him, even though at least four questions let him do that directly.
You can also find some excellent debate commentary via Potomac Ponderings, Instapundit, and Blogs for Bush (check out the roll of livebloggers, too. I wasn’t listed, but I’m here!).
Spoons says that Bush got beaten badly and asks, “Was I really this wrong about this debate, too?” Very much wrong, man. Sorry.
Steven Green drunkblogged it and scored it as a Bush win.
When I find more good stuff, I’ll update it here. That includes the transcript, too.
UPDATE: Speaking of transcripts – Behold!

While I'd never imply you're not entitled to your opinion, I point out that this time, there are quite a few people who agree with me that Bush lost (although I acknowledge that they're a minority).
I can't deny that. I just didn't see the debat ethe way you did. Bush was eneergetic, on message, came off his "talking points" often enough to sound like he was actually interested in the debate. Kerry was everything in thie debate that Bush was in the first one. I know you don't see it that way and that's okay. We can disagree on it.
I thought the creepiest thing in the whole debate was the matching outfits. That will give me nightmares for days.
