Did Kerry Cheat?
Did John Kerry cheat in the debate? Do you care?
Here’s a quick prediction. Your lefty bloggers (Oliver “Chicken McNugget” Wills, I’m looking in your direction. And Kos, wipe that saliva off your chin. It’s undignified) are going to blow it off as no big deal. Your righty bloggers (I can just hear the Power Line guys cranking up their CPUs as we speak!) are going to make sure you hear about it via gazillions of screencaps and their lamentations will fill the blogosphere.
But you’re not going to hear either one of those from me. Heck, folks, the conventional wisdom before the debate was that John Kerry was going to have to cheat just to set himself apart from the President. I remember reading a Jim Hoagland column in the Washington Post sometime before the election that said just that. So what’s the big surprise here?
Look, Democrats cheat. They cheat during the campaign. They cheat before elections. They cheat during elections. They cheat after elections. The dead routinely rise from their graves and vote Democrat. Who is shocked about this? No biggie.
Okay, maybe a little biggie. It bothers me that John Kerry felt that the rules to which he agreed didn’t really aply to him. But this whole subject is going to get no play at all with the American public. Most of us think that a little cheating is just fine, if it’s for a good cause. And what could be a better cause for Democrats than true love…err…the Presidency and driving the satanic George W. Bush out of office? So if the Bush campaign tries to make anything out of this issue, it’s going to be immediately spun by the media as a whining excuse for the President’s poor performance. Why try?
Well, there is a reason to try. And it could be done. But I don’t imagine the President would do it. He could say that what he wants, more than a victory in the election, is a clean campaign where there is no cheating and no fraud. He can then say that obviously John Kerry and his surrogates don’t believe the same thing. Then he should get off it and move to any of sevreal more important issues while the Democrats sputter in rage at his response. He again gets to look Presidential and his opponent will be the one looking childish.
But I don’t think you’ll see it happen.

Not one of your better posts, with the broadbrush accusations and all. But, if it's a cheat sheet you're looking for…

If we're using NFL rules here, based on the camera angles available, there is inconclusive evidence to overturn the call on the field. ^_^
All joking aside, Little Green Footballs has an update from the New York Post in which Democrats are saying it was a pen. If you look at the replay again, you can plainly see Kerry uncapping a pen (and placing the cap on the back of the pen).
Yeah, I read the same thing not long ago. It appears to be a pen. It's still a violation of the rules which does leave my original point about Kerry intact.
I'm not going to make a federal case of it, but hey, even a little cheat is stilla cheat.
