Our Boy Ouroboros
I had to give this some separate attention because of its sheer gall.
Andrew Sullivan has managed to tie himself into a knot today regarding the Bush Document Forgery story.
Here’s one of his first posts on the subject.
The blogs prove one thing, though. If these documents are legit, they are devastating to Bush.
That’s a pretty bold thing to say, but have no fear. Sullivan needed to define for us, not why he felt that way, but what the definition of “devastating” is.
To clarify something. When I said that the Killian memos were “devastating” to Bush, I should have been clearer. I didn’t mean devastating to his re-election prospects. They’re a blip on the radar screen of the campaign. Just devastating to the idea that he never got special treatment because of his privileged background during the Vietnam war. Of course he did. And a lot of other people did too. Bush still did a hefty stint of service – certainly heftier than, say, Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney or John Ashcroft. And now the forgery theory seems to be gaining momentum, thanks to Drudge. I have no expertise in these matters, as I’ve already said. But if they are forgeries and the forgers are in any way connected to the Kerry campaign, then they really could be devastating to Kerry’s campaign.
So, if the documents are the read deal, they’re “devastating” to Bush, but not in any way that actually matters or anything. How else could they be “devstating” except to his reelection chances? Could there be some personal devastation they could wreak? Would future honorarium-payers spurn Bush because of them?
Don’t be ridiculous. Sullivan’s rowing back here faster than a shell full of Yalies so he can claim “devastation” for Kerry if they’re forgeries.
Devastation everywhere, including Sullivan’s coherence.
